Assistant Store Manager - Thrift Store

The Veterans Multi-Service Center (VMC) is looking for a full-time Assistant Manager for our Thrift Store located in the Mayfair section of Philadelphia. VMC’s Assistant Managers are hired, trained and developed to prepare them for advancement in retail, non-profit and social services. The position’s work schedule is 40 hours weekly. Benefits include paid holidays, paid-time-off, medical, dental, vision and life insurance. In addition, after one year of employment, enrollment in employer-paid pension.

Starting pay is typically $13.00 an hour.



Make a positive impact on people by providing friendly, competent sales and warehouse labor and guidance to other store workers to create a pleasant shopping experience for customers. Schedule staff to ensure adequate coverage of store needs for all hours of operation. Use your powers of observation to be informed of the interactions and happenings in and around the store and generate your own bright ideas to encourage customer retention, growth of customer base, and growth in daily sales. Be alert to expense saving/cost reduction ideas which will enhance net income. Learn store policies, procedures, and guidelines. Enhance relationships by demonstrating effective problem resolution skills. Utilize a computer for the clerical components of the position.



High school diploma or equivalent and one-year related work experience. Position requires strong communication skills with customers and employees. Appropriate valid driver’s license and pass MVR (motor vehicle records) check. Must be a team player, a self-starter, a good motivator of others, and perform well with minimal supervision.

Physical and Work Environment Requirements: Must be capable of performing the above essential duties. Capable of regularly lifting 20-30 pounds and sometimes up to 50+ pounds. Ability to bend, stoop, squat and climb frequently throughout the work day. Some work will be done in an area with limited temperature control. It will be hot in the summer and cold in the winter. The noise level is moderate.

Preferred qualifications: Supervisory experience, retail sales and cash handling experience strongly preferred.

Deputy Executive Director for Advancement

The Deputy Executive Director for Advancement position requires effective leadership competencies essential to participate in strategic planning and development activities; including donor solicitation and grant preparation. Success for the Deputy Executive Director for Advancement means that VMC has a robust, growing stream of contributed revenue and a development team equipped for ongoing success. This position reports to the Executive Director and works closely with the Board Chair and Chair of the Board’s Development Committee.

Essential Job Functions Include:

  • Develop annual fundraising strategy and priorities for fundraising events, including defining the annual calendar of events and setting net revenue goals
  • Lead all gift/grant management activities, including at least two annual appeals and other engagement activities to maintain an enthusiastic and engaged base of annual supporters
  • Develop and implement marketing and communication plans and strategies including public relations, media relations, on-line giving, digital communications, key messaging, storytelling and brand experience
  • Perform prospect research on foundations and corporations to evaluate potentials for corporate and foundation grants
  • Ensure timely submission of all necessary correspondence, reports and proposals to steward individual gifts, foundation grants, corporate grants and sponsorships
  • Work collaboratively with the Executive Director, Program Staff, Board of Directors and other stakeholders to identify fundraising opportunities, set goals, create new project initiatives and manage relationships with VMC’s top supporters
  • Manage the operations and fiscal performance of fund development activities including creating project plans and annual budgets.
  • Make presentations to potential donors, service organizations, corporations, etc.
  • Provide regular reports regarding fundraising progress and prospects

CHIEF Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree; master’s degree in public administration or equivalent is preferred
  • 5+ years leading successful non-profit fund-raising experience, with a proven and consistent record of raising at least $25M in philanthropic funds and donor acquisitions; including exposure to a mix of fundraising activities
  • Minimum 3 years grant writing experience with solid oral and written communication skills; ability to write clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive proposals
  • Strong fiscal management skills including budgeting and projecting fund development income and expenses
  • Deep knowledge of fundraising techniques and strategies
  • Demonstrated leadership of successful fundraising campaigns
  • Knowledge of the Greater Philadelphia Region’s philanthropic community a plus
  • Initiative, drive, entrepreneurial acumen, planning and evaluation skills
