South Jersey Benefits Clinic

MILLVILLE, NJ - We are grateful to have had the opportunity to serve 54 Veteran households - including 32 households with new claims and many others with utility, heating, and other assistance!

"This is a semi-annual event that we are able to provide here at our location," said Ryan McGoldrick, program manager, serving Southern New Jersey and Delaware, for Veterans Multi-Service Center. "It's by the generosity of our VA partners who are able to come here on site, and that's something that really is hard to come by in southern New Jersey—finding those VA representatives to be able to talk to them one on one, and get service at the point of contact, [which] can be challenging here."

Students' Creative Solution for Vets

PHILADELPHIA, PA - Students from NEHS #RewriteTheCardboard!

Shout out to the amazing students at Northeast High School for joining us to “Rewrite The Cardboard”!

In an effort to reduce food waste, this team of students is participating in The Aspen Challenge. They have collected perishable and non-perishable foods that otherwise would be thrown away and donated them to our kitchen!

Monday through Friday we serve breakfast AND lunch to local Veterans and donations like these are incredible. We are grateful to be part of this creative initiative. Way to go NEHS Meraki Vikings!

(Sign reads: "We are Team Meraki. We reduce food waste and donate food with love, passion, and purpose to #RewriteTheCardboard")

**UPDATE: Team Meraki won their competition in Philadelphia and are going on to compete this summer in Aspen, Colorado before influential leaders like Bill Gates! Congrats Team Meraki! We can't wait to see what's next!**

Helping fellow vets make transition

Tim Perimeter

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Veterans Multi-Service Center knows what it means to serve.

The majority of our staff are Veterans themselves who understand the challenges Vets face when coming home. Our Executive Director, Retired Army Col. Tim Williams, is no exception...

This week, he told about his transition to civilian life:

"My entire identity was tied up in wearing a uniform since I was 17," he said. "I turned 18 in basic training. Emotionally, retirement was tough on me. I thought I was ready… but I wasn't prepared mentally for what happened to me…

"I'm a Special Forces guy. I thrive on volatile and uncertain environments. So it took me six months to come to grips with never wearing a uniform again."

Williams has seen many friends leave the service and "have nothing to strive for, and get lost. Or some come home with issues which are exacerbated" without daily routines.

Now, he is dedicated to helping his fellow Veterans make the transition.

He oversees our staff of 135 people across 11 facilities in three states, including two transitional-housing facilities on the grounds of Coatesville VA Medical Center; a thrift store on Frankford Avenue; and Central PA and South Jersey.

The VMC is no small operation, but there is a lot of work to be done.

Veterans Project Awarded Tax Credits

Governor Wolf Announces Tax Credits and PennHOMES Funding for Affordable Multifamily Developments in Pennsylvania

Funding Administered by PHFA Will Support Construction and Rehabilitation of 39 Developments Statewide

July 14, 2016

Harrisburg, PA – Governor Tom Wolf today announced awards of $40.3 million in tax credits and $5.9 million in PennHOMES funding for the construction of 39 affordable multifamily housing developments located throughout Pennsylvania. The tax credits are administered by the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency and were approved by its board.

The tax credits awarded to developers will be used to attract more than $407 million of investment funding for building, and rehabilitating, multifamily housing offering affordable rents.

“This tax credit program touches many lives by making affordable housing available through a powerful partnership between the public and private sectors,” said Governor Wolf. “Pennsylvania communities win because the program makes possible the construction of housing for seniors, veterans and others that wouldn’t be possible otherwise.”

When completed, the developments receiving funding today will preserve and create an additional 1,875 rental housing units for Pennsylvania residents.

"I am the wife of a Viet Nam Veteran. My husband started going to PVMSEC 10 years ago for help. No mere words could ever express how much his life and in turn our family life has changed for the better in those years. I am and always will be grateful for the wonderful care he has received at the Philadelphia Veterans Multi-Service Center & Education Center."
